Grassroots Leadership is honored to welcome Kanoa Arteaga to our team this month as our development manager.
Kanoa Arteaga is a transmasculine person originally from the San Francisco Bay Area. His entry to social justice work is greatly informed by his time spent as a community organizer in Texas. He moved to Austin in 2012 and founded two organizations aimed at uplifting the lives of queer and trans people of color: LEADATX, an anti-racist reading and discussion group, and Queer Qumbia, a monthly QTPOC dance party. He was closely mentored by local queer and trans elders of color who taught him the importance of centering the experiences and voices of those most deeply impacted by the issues at hand.
In his previous role as Program Manager of an LGBTQ community center, he supported queer and trans youth who were often under-resourced and socially isolated as they navigated the intersections of juvenile justice, homelessness and foster care. As an organizer and community member, he’s seen firsthand the impacts of mass incarceration, state-sanctioned violence and immigration detention on queer and trans communities, and looks forward to continuing this work with Grassroots Leadership.
