Grassroots Leadership and Texans United for Families will be leading a second vigil and protest outside of the IAH Polk Secure Adult Detention Center calling for its immediate closure. After conducting a visit during the summer of 2012 and speaking with numerous men detained at the facility, members of TUFF, Grassroots Leadership & allies identified the Polk County Detention Center as one of the top ten worst immigrant prisons in the U.S., guilty of committing acute and chronic human rights violations.
Our first vigil outside of Polk was held on December 8, 2012 and we are returning to continue pushing for its closure. Many of the men at Polk are fathers who want nothing more than to be reunited with their families and hold their children again. Join us in this showing of solidarity with the men detained at the Polk County Detention Center and help us call for their release!
This event is part of the Detention Watch Network's Expose and Close campaign, a national effort highlighting ten of the worst ICE detention facilities in the nation and demanding their closure. We will take a charter bus from Austin to Livingston to protest outside of the facility and return that evening. We are also encouraging allies in Houston to join us at the facility.
