We are looking forward to seeing you at the #EndFamilyDetention protest in Dilley, Texas this Saturday, May 2nd! Please read for important logistics.
We will meet at the park on Commerce Street near Dilley City Hall (101 S Commerce St Dilley, TX 78017) between 11 and 11:30 a.m. We march at noon.
We will have music, a short program, and organize ourselves before we begin the march. There’s plenty of street parking within a short walk of the park. There is no parking lot near the detention center itself, so be sure to arrive at the park on time to join in the march or be bussed over.
The march will begin at 12 p.m., and is just under 2 miles long. We will be marching along a highway shoulder and crossing the highway with a police escort. If you are not able or don’t wish to march, you can participate in outreach and art activities in the park and be bussed to the detention camp for the protest. We will all join together again at the detention camp at 1 p.m.
Once we are in front of the detention camp, we will chant, hear from people directly affected by family detention, learn how to take further action, participate in street theater (with giant puppets!), and have a closing prayer. Beginning at 2:45 p.m., people who drove their own cars will be shuttled back to the park to pick them up. Everyone who came on a bus will be picked up at the detention camp.
Please make sure to bring:
A water bottle
Cool, loose clothing that protects you from the sun and shoes for marching
A lunch if you would like one, we are only providing light snacks
An umbrella, for shade
There will be a health and safety team available for any minor emergencies (i.e. heat stroke, scraped knees). If you experience a major life-threatening emergency at any point, call 911!
During the march, we ask that you stay on the shoulder of the highway at all times. Please help remind each other if you see others near you expanding out towards the road. We are planning for a peaceful, safe, and family friendly protest, so please use your best judgement to disengage from any conflict that might arise from residents as we traverse through the town of Dilley — we would like everyone to return home safe and sound at the end of the day.
(For those who are registered to get on the Austin bus organized by TUFF and Grassroots Leadership:
