This year has seen the return of family detention, which is the detention and deportation of migrant women and children. Private prison corporations are being granted contracts for these facilities, making record profits while detaining families in prison-like conditions. Reports of sexual abuse, threats of separating children and parents, and lack of proper nutrition have already surfaced from the isolated facilities. Grassroots Leadership is working to end family detention yet again, and has partnered with filmmaker Matthew Gossage to produce our latest film, "No Sanctuary: Big Business and Family Detention." I hope you'll join Matthew Gossage and I this week in New York City for one of two film screenings to learn more about this unjust policy affecting migrant families.
On Thursday January 15th at 12pm-1pm will be a bring-your-own lunch screening, also at the Church Center for UN, 1st Avenue & East 44th Street, New York, NY 10017 on the 2nd floor. The event is co-sponsored by the General Board of Church & Society of the United Methodist Church, Grassroots Leadership, Loretto Community, and United Methodist Women.
