Boyd Vance Theater, George Washington Carver Cultural Center
Since May 2013 those incarcerated at the Travis County Jail have been unable to visit with their family and friends in person. Instead, they've been forced to use a video chat service provided by Dallas-based company Securus. For nearly two years, Grassroots Leadership, alongside our community allies, waged a powerful campaign led by those who have experienced video jail visits first-hand and not only brought in-person visits back to Travis County, but also passed state legislation that will prevent other counties from replacing in-person visits with video chats.
(In)Securus Technology: An Assault on Prison Rights, by Austin-based filmmaker Matthew Gossage, chronicles the fight for in-person visits in Travis County and connects the dots between private, for-profit interests and incarceration. Join us for the Austin premier of this first-of-its kind exposé of this new technology, its expansion across the country, and how to organize locally to to stop its growth.
