Grassroots Leadership Joins National Day of Action Calling on Wells Fargo to Divest from Private Prisons

January 23, 2012

It is time to invest in our communities and stop supporting for-profit incarceration!

On Tuesday, January 24th, Grassroots Leadership and our allies around the nation will support a day of action to call on Wells Fargo to divest from the for-profit private prison industry.

Last year, Grassroots Leadership withdrew its funds from our local Wells Fargo Branch and began to bank with a small, more local institution. When asked why we were withdrawing our money, we sat down with two officers of the bank and talked about its investment in the buying and selling of human beings through the criminal justice and immigration systems. They were clearly uninformed of, and then appalled, at the investments.

Wells Fargo is one of the largest investors in the for-profit prison industry, holding more than 3.5 million shares in GEO Group and a smaller amount of shares in The Corrections Corporation of America (CCA). We invite human and civil rights groups, houses of worship, community organizers and individuals to join us in telling Wells Fargo that they should INVEST in our communities and DIVEST from the private prison industry!

At Grassroots Leadership we believe that no one should profit from the incarceration of human beings. We work with communities across the country to abolish for-profit prisons, jails, and detention centers.
