AUSTIN — Tomorrow community members will testify to request the intervention of Williamson County Commissioners Court on the case of Laura Monterrosa, an immigrant woman detained at the T. Don Hutto Detention Center.

Advocates fear for her safety while she remains detained. Monterrosa’s mental and physical health continue to decline dangerously after she was driven to attempt suicide inside detention in early January. Monterrosa has spent nearly 9 months in the T. Don Hutto Detention Center where she has spoken out about being sexually assaulted by a guard. Her physical health has also reached crisis level. She has been frequently vomiting and unable to eat for several days.

Williamson County Commissioners have oversight over the Hutto Detention Center, as the county is a party to the contract along with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and CoreCivic. The county is liable for any rights violations that occur at the detention center and can elect to pull out of the contract at any time.
