Laura Monterrosa speaks out after her release

March 22, 2018

Supporters and advocates comment on ongoing abuses at Hutto and Williamson County Commissioners’ deliberation on detention center contract

AUSTIN — Monday Laura Monterrosa will speak to the public following her release from the T. Don Hutto detention center Friday evening, after being detained for approximately 10 months.

Laura broke her silence about sexual assault in detention in November 2017. Since then, supporters have rallied in front of the detention center, made phone calls and sent petitions by the thousands demanding her release. Supporters in Central Texas lined up to visit Laura daily while she was in detention.

Advocates will also address the ongoing abuses at the Hutto detention center and the action taken Tuesday at the Williamson County Commissioners Court, where Commissioners  deliberated on the detention center contract in private during Executive Session, but did not take any public action on the contract following their discussion.

Due to the sensitive nature of Laura’s case, she will only be answering questions that have been previously screened by her in conjunction with her attorneys. Please send your questions by noon Friday morning to cparker@grassrootsleadership.org.
