AUSTIN — Grassroots Leadership’s 8th annual Dancing Away Detention aims to build momentum to free the women at T. Don Hutto Detention Center for good. So it is being held for the first time in beautiful Taylor, Texas just minutes from this notorious immigration prison. ALL PROCEEDS will go towards the Hutto Community Deportation Defense and Bond Fund. We’ll honor women formerly detained & other incredibly brave women on the frontlines of immigrant rights here in Texas. Our honorees this year are:
-
Laura Monterrosa, our keynote speaker, will receive the Courage and Bravery Award for leading the campaign for her own freedom from T. Don Hutto and inspiring others to keep fighting.
-
Kate Lincoln-Goldfinch, for her tireless work advocating for separated families and coordinating an army of attorneys and volunteers to respond to the crisis this summer.
-
Carmen Zuvieta, for her years of organizing with families impacted by detention and deportation and her unending commitment to fighting alongside women and immigrants in Central Texas.
-
Mujeres Apoyando a Mujeres, for their amazing work to raise bond money and build solidarity with women detained in Hutto.
Whether it’s bonding out a mother to be reunited with her child, supporting a hunger strike leader facing solitary, or setting a sexual assault survivor free, Grassroots Leadership is raising money to respond in these moments of crisis.
