This Thursday, Austin City Council will debate and vote on a Fair Chance Hiring Ordinance that will allow individuals with a conviction history to fairly compete for jobs, without the stigma of a criminal record.
We need your help to send a strong message to councilmembers that you support a Fair Chance Hiring Ordinance that seeks to restore civil rights and combat institutional racism in our city! Here are 3 things you can do this week to join the fight:
1) Sign and share our petition HERE!
2) TODAY(Wednesday 3/22) call YOUR councilmember and ask them to support a strong Fair Chance Hiring Ordinance! They need to hear from their constituents. Remember, they work for you!
Not sure which district you live in? Find out HERE! And, here’s a helpful script you can use when making the call:
Hello, I’m calling to speak with Council Member [insert name]. My name is [your full name] and I am a resident of [insert your district #]. I’m calling to express my support for item #19 on Thursday’s council meeting agenda. Austin urgently needs a strong Fair Chance Hiring Ordinance that allows individuals with a conviction history to fairly compete for jobs. Working class families and families of color are most impacted by our mass incarceration crisis. Protection from discriminatory hiring practices is the right thing to do. Please vote ‘yes’ on item #19 Thursday and give Austinites a fair chance. Thank you.
3) TOMORROW 3/24 JOIN US AT CITY HALL at 6PM to show we’re a force to be reckoned with! We will hear from many of our community members who have been directly impacted by the criminal justice system and have been fighting for the past year for this crucial ordinance.
We’ll have a banner and signs to make our presence known. This is our opportunity to change the course of history in Austin and across the south. We’re so close! PLEASE STAND WITH US THURSDAY!
