On Wednesday, dozens are expected to speak out when the State of Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) will be holding a public hearing regarding the licensing two family detention centers in Texas as child care facilities.

In late July, Judge Dolly Gee ruled that both the detention centers in Texas failed to meet minimum legal requirements for facilities housing children and ordered the closing of both of these facilities. The State of Texas is now trying to adopt something calledProposed Rule 40, which would make outrageous exceptions for family detention centers that would allow them to be licensed as a “child care facilities” under reduced minimum standards.

Families that were previously in detention, community advocates, and advocacy organizations, will be having a press conference before the hearing.
