AUSTIN — Community members are calling on Rep. Beto O’Rourke to stand up for Laura Monterrosa and all immigrants facing attacks in Texas. Today’s action comes just hours after ICE tried to force Laura to sign travel papers to be deported immediately and a day after ICE admitted it had failed to provide adequate medical care to Ms. Monterrosa during a hearing on a Temporary Restraining Order in Federal Court.

Thursday, 3/15/18 at 11am, community members will rally outside Rep. O’Rourke’s campaign headquarters in Austin, joining folks who are currently there and willing to spend as many days and nights as necessary. They are calling on him to do everything within his power to ensure that Laura is released from detention.

“We need a champion and are looking to Rep. O’Rourke now to take action on his promise to support Laura by doing everything he can — which is a lot — to get her released from detention,” said Claudia Muñoz, immigration programs director at Grassroots Leadership. “The legal system failed Laura yesterday by refusing to hold ICE accountable and release her from detention. We can’t solely depend on the courts to achieve justice for Laura, especially when a federal court just upheld the racist SB4 law. As community members, we are demanding action from elected officials to protect Laura and all immigrants from deportation”.

Laura Monterrosa has been speaking out about the sexual abuse she survived while detained at the T. Don Hutto detention center in Taylor, Texas. Despite facing retaliation inside, including solitary confinement, Laura has shown incredible courage in speaking out to tell her story.
