Night Out for Safety and Liberation

Night Out for Safety and Liberation was an essential gathering and an abode when our communities desperately needed support, healing, love, and, most importantly, liberation from the constraints of our failed systems. Freedom fighters and dedicated community activists from the Ella Baker Center have been tirelessly organizing community groups nationwide to host and facilitate their community gatherings.

Since 2013, these efforts have profoundly impacted people, allowing them to feel loved, valued, and supported across the country, providing a much-needed beacon of hope and optimism in the face of the harm caused by systemic failures, police brutality, and other atrocities perpetrated by the criminal legal and immigration enforcement systems.

The message conveyed through this initiative is both direct and bold, carrying a weight that resonates with individuals who possess lived experiences and can deeply feel its significance. Our themes of power, equity, love, healing, liberation, and community support serve as the foundation of this initiative.

For one special night, our members, staff, and community can truly be themselves within a space filled with inspiration and imagined possibilities!

This year, we chose to unify the themes for the communities of Austin and Houston, inviting individuals from the community to come together and table their organizations, thus providing vital free resources to all community members. We featured fantastic speakers, talented singers, and inspiring poets who filled the night with art and uplifting words of affirmation.

Even though our days leading up to the event were filled with weekly team meetings, gathering membership input, and engaging in community organizing efforts, it is always a night to remember when the community stands as the very center of safety and liberation.
