A Conversation With Satsuki Ina

  • Street Jones Building 1000 East 11th Street Austin, TX, 78702 United States (map)

Join us on Tuesday, Feb 11th for a conversation with Dr. Satsuki Ina, a survivor of the Crystal City Family Internment Camp, one of the primary facilities in the United States used to imprison Japanese families during World War II. Dr. Ina has spent her life working against injustice, including immigration detention of children and others, as a psychologist and advocate.

This conversation with Dr. Ina will cover her newly released memoir, The Poet and the Silk Girl: A Memoir of Love, Imprisonment, and Protest, and its relevance in this current political climate with the resurgence of the threat of the use of the Alien Enemies Act. The event will feature a moderated conversation diving into the intersections of Japanese and Jewish experiences of displacement, persecution, and resilience and how these histories connect to the modern-day issues in the U.S.–Mexico border and the broader implications of national detention policies.

Dr. Ina’s insights will ground this critical dialogue, creating space to reflect on the shared legacies of these communities and their relevance to today’s urgent social and political challenges.
